If You’re Eating Steak Without THIS, You’re Doing It Wrong — According to Lawrence County
When we asked y’all what no steak is complete without, the comments section lit up like a grill on a Friday night. From ketchup lovers to “just give me more steak” folks, here’s how it all shook out — from least mentioned to most mentioned.
🥢 The Quirky Crowd
These one-offs might not have been popular, but they made us laugh:
Slaw (Carlene Heflin): A backyard BBQ twist.
Ranch Dressing (Lori Bou): We knew ranch would sneak in here somewhere.
Grits, Mushrooms & Sunnyside Eggs (Gary Hester): Now that’s a breakfast-for-supper combo if we’ve ever heard one.
Sautéed Mushrooms (Donna Michelle Kimbrell): A little fancy flair never hurt anyone.
🍷 The Sauce & Seasoning Showdown
Here’s where the crowd started to split:
Salt & Pepper (Nathaniel Hammack, Kim Sessions Vines): Simple. Classic. Doesn’t need anything else.
A1 (Jessika Rose, Kelli Armstrong Blevins, Rachel Donaldson, Pamela Haynes, Mitzi Trussell): Some defended it, some threatened to riot. Mike McCluskey even said if someone brought up steak sauce, he was gonna “lose his well you know 😤.” Sorry Mike… looks like a few folks weren’t scared.
Dale’s Sauce (Patty Terry): A Southern staple that held its ground.
🥔 The Potato Powerhouse
Y’all made it clear: if steak’s on the plate, potatoes aren’t far behind.
Baked Potato / Loaded Potato: From Sharon Nelson’s “loaded baked potato and salad” to Anna Reeder’s enthusiastic “Loaded baked potato!” it was the runaway favorite.
Sweet Potato (Debra Pitts Parker): A healthier twist made it into the mix.
Grilled Potatoes (Vicki Gossman Randles): Paired with green beans for the full Sunday dinner vibe.
🥗 The Salad Squad
Almost neck-and-neck with potatoes was salad.
A Crisp Side Salad: Mentioned by folks like Susan Bolton, Beth Briley, and Darlene Jordan — all insisting no steak is complete without greens.
Caesar or House Salad (Isaac Gonzalez): Gotta love a man who specifies.
“Good Salad” (Charlene Kerby, John Sanford, and more): Simple words, big expectations.
🍳 Honorable Mentions: The Lone Wolves
Some answers didn’t get repeats, but they sure stood out:
Fried Eggs (Jon Ray): Steak and eggs, but make it dinner. We love a man with a breakfast vision.
Country Bob’s Sauce (Johnnie Camp Schuman): The cult favorite snuck its way in. Country Bob fans, rise up.
Sweet Tea (Felicia Liles & Meliddia Sissy McCloud): Both swore by a cold glass of tea with lemon to wash it down. Because let’s face it — we’re in Alabama, y’all.
A Fork (Jerri Wilbanks Ray): She’s not wrong. Practical and straight to the point.
More Steak (Tom Pa): Maybe the most LCtoday answer of them all.
👉 Quick Intermission: Before we crown the #1, don’t forget to swing by the LCtoday Shop for hats, stickers, and more. If steak deserves its sides, your hometown pride deserves its gear.
🏆 And the #1 LCtoday Combo Is…
It wasn’t even close: the official Lawrence County consensus says a steak needs a loaded baked potato and a good salad on the side. Extra credit if there’s sweet tea nearby, Dale’s or A1 on standby (depending on your camp), and cooked by the right person (Courtney Green and Jamie Segars Luker both made sure we didn’t forget the cook).
So, next time you fire up the grill, you know what Lawrence County expects.
What about you? Did your pick make the list, or are you still standing strong with “more steak” and “a fork”?
