Ode to Dads (and the Ones Who Stepped In)

There’s a certain kind of love that doesn’t always come with fireworks or fanfare. It might look like early mornings, quiet sacrifices, and steady hands. It sounds like the creak of the floorboard at 5 a.m. or the hum of an engine warming up before sunrise. It’s the kind of love that shows up, again and again, without needing applause.

That’s the love of a dad.

To the fathers who have been there from the beginning—
Who counted ten fingers and toes through blurry, teary eyes…
Who whispered "I'm here" into newborn ears before we could even understand the weight of those words.
You were our first home. Our protector. Our soft place to land.

And to the stepdads, grandpas, uncles, coaches, and big brothers who stepped into shoes they didn’t have to fill—
You chose love. You chose to stand in the gap.
You didn’t just patch holes. You built foundations.
You taught us that family isn’t always about blood—sometimes, it’s about being brave enough to love when you didn’t have to.

There are things we didn’t say enough.
Thank you for working those long hours, even when your body ached.
Thank you for fixing what broke—our bikes, our cars, our hearts.
Thank you for showing us what it means to keep going when life gets hard.

And maybe you weren’t the hug-and-cry type.
Maybe you didn’t always say it with words.
But we saw it—in the way you watched out the window until we got home,
In the way you said “text me when you get there,”
In every time you whispered, “I’m proud of you,” like it was a sacred secret.

Some dads live next door. Some live in Heaven.
Some show up with wisdom, others with wit.
But no matter how they look, or sound, or where they are—
The love of a father leaves a mark that time can't erase.

So here’s to you, Dad.
And to the ones who stepped in and stayed.
We carry your lessons in our bones.
We walk taller because you held our hand.
We love harder because you showed us how.

Happy Father’s Day. 💙
