What’s Cookin’ in Lawrence County? Not These Veggies!

We asked y’all one simple (but slightly spicy) question:
👉 If you had to pick one veggie to never eat again, which one are you banning from your plate?
And boy, the responses came in hot! Some veggies got gently nudged off the plate… others were launched off like they’d insulted your mama’s cooking.

Here’s how it all boiled down—from the “eh, I could live without it” crowd to the full-on veggie villains:

🌿 Spinach – 5.8%

“Popeye can have it.”
Spinach wasn’t hated so much as just unwelcome. With three folks giving it the cold shoulder, it seems like not everyone’s a fan of this iron-packed leaf.

Fun fact: Spinach got a major boost in the '30s thanks to Popeye… but today, it’s often accused of tasting like sadness when cooked.

🫛 Peas – 7.7%

“Too soft. Too green. Too weird.”
Green peas and English peas got four votes, lumped together as tiny spheres of betrayal. Whether it’s the texture or the flavor, some of y’all say they can stay frozen forever.

Fun fact: Peas were once a symbol of wealth in ancient Egypt. Now? Just a symbol of picky eaters everywhere.

🥉 Asparagus – 9.6%

“Fancy lookin’. Funny tastin’.”
Five folks declared asparagus the enemy. Whether steamed, grilled, or hidden under cheese sauce, it’s still a no from some.

Fun fact: Asparagus makes your pee smell funny because of sulfur compounds. This did not help its case.

🥈 Celery – 11.5%

“Crunchy water with strings? No thanks.”
Six people threw celery straight into the compost bin. Bland, stringy, and often the afterthought on a veggie tray, it just didn’t make the cut.

Fun fact: Celery burns more calories to chew than it provides… which feels like a scam.

🥇 Brussels Sprouts – 13.5%

“Never again. Ever.”
Taking the crown as Lawrence County’s most hated veggie: Brussels sprouts! With 7 votes, these little green orbs of doom got roasted—and not the tasty kind.

Fun fact: The bitterness most folks hate is caused by compounds that are actually cancer-fighting… but that didn’t save them from your scorn.

A Few That Still Got the Axe:

These didn’t top the list, but they still found themselves in veggie jail:
🥕 Carrots, 🧅 onions, 🫘 lima and pinto beans, 🥦 broccoli, 🥬 kale, 🧄 turnip greens, 🫑 bell peppers, and even the innocent cucumber.

One person even came for avocado, saying: “I don’t even know if it’s a veggie, but if it is, that one.” 😂

So, What Did We Learn?

Veggies may be good for you, but they’re not always good to you. Whether it's bad school lunch flashbacks or just a texture that sends chills down your spine, there's no shame in having a veggie nemesis.
