“I Know What I Saw”: 10 Unbelievable Sightings in Lawrence County That’ll Make You Think
Sometimes, you see something so strange, so unexpected, that it sticks with you forever—whether anyone else believes you or not.
That’s exactly what happened when LCtoday asked the community: “What’s something you’re 100% certain you saw, but no one else believes you?” The responses poured in. From eerie creatures to peaceful encounters, these ten stories stood out as the most vivid, unforgettable tales from folks right here in Lawrence County.
1. The Phantom Horse of 217
Rita Kelsoe was driving along 217, near Gordon Terry Parkway, just as the daylight was fading. What happened next has stayed with her for years.
“I was on 217 close to Gordon Terry about dusky dark and a huge horse came right down the driver side of my car, bounced off, and when I looked back it was still galloping down the road,” she recalled. “There was horse slobber on my windshield and mirror and down the side of the car but no damage to the car or the horse!”
Her momma believed her because she saw the aftermath—but no one else did.
2. The Light-Absorbing Shadow
Jessica Lane’s story is one she still struggles to explain—and those who were with her that night refuse to even talk about it.
“This story is so intense that the people with me won’t talk about it,” she said. “But about 7 years ago we were entering Chicken Foot near Johnson Chapel. It was dark and as we went around the curve, we saw something in the road. We slowed down and it stood up into a human shape. But when the lights from the car hit it, it didn’t illuminate the figure—rather it got darker and absorbed the light as it took two large steps into the woods. And it was gone. To this day it still sends chills down my spine.”
3. The Panther on 434
Black panther sightings are some of the most hotly debated in Lawrence County. But for Dawn Ray Rowe, what she saw was unmistakable.
“A black panther on 434,” she stated plainly.
Her comment sparked a flood of support, with others chiming in with similar experiences in the area—but Dawn was the one who set the tone: simple, sure, and unshaken.
4. A Kangaroo in Langtown
Jessica Lane brought it up first—almost jokingly: “Amber Lane and Sherry Lane Moreland swears they spotted a kangaroo in Langtown about 10 years ago.”
Amber quickly replied: “More than 10 years ago. It was Aiden’s 2nd birthday.”
When Jessica questioned it, Amber doubled down. “I know it was. It was down and looked like a tan dog. But once it stood up and hopped away, I knew it was a kangaroo.”
As it turns out, it may not be as far-fetched as it seems. Jessica added: “I believe you now because when I lived in Cullman there was one named Jackie Legs that was notorious for getting away from his owner.”
5. The Charging Emu at the Rec Center
Stormey Lawless shared a memory that’s equal parts terrifying and hilarious.
“An emu trying to run down a pack of Girl Scout troops at the rec center in Moulton. We had to run for our lives, and it almost caught us. We were about 9–10 years old. So it was well over double our size,” she wrote, adding a laughing emoji.
The mental image alone is enough to stick with you—but for Stormey and the troop, it was all too real.
6. The Bear in the Woods
Jace Cannon’s bear sighting from childhood recently found new validation.
“I seen a bear in the woods on Hwy 24 when I was like 8 or something,” he wrote. “I seen it clear as day—it was in the patch of woods between Joe Wheeler and the cutoff road to Big Sam’s! And now I just seen an article about bears in LC!”
It’s a story he’s clearly held onto, and one that’s now backed up by modern news.
7. Angel on a Cloud
Not every story was scary—some, like Julia Craig Cole’s, were filled with wonder.
“An angel sitting on a cloud, scooping water with a bucket from the blue sky,” she wrote.
Simple, poetic, and unforgettable.
8. The Warning Dream
Ann Mitchell Milligan shared one of the most chilling and personal stories in the thread.
“The red blazer that killed my son—I dreamed of a wreck for months,” she said. “Just didn’t know it was going to kill my son.”
It’s a heartbreaking glimpse into something she could feel coming, but was powerless to stop.
9. The Feeling of Peace
Kendra Michele opened up about two experiences she believes were signs from above.
“My mom passed suddenly when I was 19 of heart failure,” she wrote. “Me and Dad were getting ready to see her at the funeral home for the first time and I told him I didn’t want to go. He said I didn’t have to, and I told him I was going—I just didn’t want to. I mean, I had literally woken up beside her and she had passed in her sleep. I was a 19-year-old kid. Dad told me if Mama could do anything to help us through this, then she would. We went in to see her at the funeral home and once we saw her we felt a feeling of peace. We talked later and we both felt that same peace. Like she was helping us get through it.”
Then came another moment, years later.
“Just 7 months later I was pregnant with my first and then after with my second child. To this day I believe God sent me that peace. Then 11 years later I lost my dad in a car accident. The night after it happened I was dreaming—I guess you could call it—I saw my dad in my bedroom doorway smiling from ear to ear. I hadn’t seen him smile like that since Mama died. I jumped awake and I was facing my doorway, and he was gone. But to me that was a feeling of peace—he was finally at peace with my Mama. Thank you for reading my story.”
10. Bigfoot in Bankhead
Jo Ann Archer’s story straddles the line between spooky and skeptical—but still makes you think.
“Bigfoot: under the big power lines in Bankhead,” she wrote. When asked when it happened, she followed up with honesty: “Several years ago. It could have been any large animal… it was a long way off from the road. I don’t really think it was Bigfoot… lol!”
Even so, that one distant figure stuck with her. As she implied—it may not have been Bigfoot, but it sure wasn't ordinary.
What Do You Believe?
Whether you're a believer in the unexplainable or a friendly skeptic, one thing’s for sure: Lawrence County has no shortage of wild, touching, and eerie stories. These may be hard to prove, but for the people who lived them—they’re unforgettable.
