The Lawrence County Job Fair Is Coming — But Is Your Resume Ready?

If you’re planning to attend the Lawrence County Job Fair on April 29, 2025, one of the best things you can bring with you is a solid resume. A resume is like a one-page flyer that tells employers who you are, what you’ve done, and what you’re good at. It helps them decide who to talk to and who might be a good fit for their job openings.

Even if you’ve never made a resume before, or don’t know where to start, this guide will walk you through it step by step.

What You’ll Need to Make a Resume

You don’t need a fancy computer or expensive software. You can make a great resume using free tools on almost any device.

If you have a Windows computer:

  • Microsoft Word

  • Or Word Online at office.com (free with a Microsoft account)

If you have a Mac:

  • Pages (free on Mac)

  • Or Microsoft Word for Mac

Free tools anyone can use:

  • Canva (www.canva.com/resumes) – user-friendly with free templates

  • Google Docs (docs.google.com) – free with a Gmail account

Step 1: Start With Your Name and Contact Info

At the very top of the page, type:

  • Your full name

  • Your phone number

  • Your email address

  • Your city and state (you don’t need your full mailing address)

It should look something like this:

John Smith
Moulton, AL
(256) 555-1234
johnsmith@email.com

Step 2: Add Your Work Experience

This is where you list the jobs you’ve had. Start with the most recent one and go backwards.

For each job, include:

  • Job title (like “Cook” or “Cashier”)

  • Business name and location

  • Dates you worked there

  • 2 to 4 short bullet points describing what you did

Example:

Cook – Jack’s, Moulton, AL
March 2020 – Present

  • Cooked meals for over 100 customers each day

  • Kept the kitchen clean and followed safety rules

  • Trained two new team members

Tip: Start each bullet with an action word like helped, cleaned, fixed, trained, organized, or delivered.

Step 3: Add Your Education

List the school you went to and the year you finished. If you earned a GED or attended a trade school, include that too.

Example:

Lawrence County High School – Moulton, AL
Graduated: 2015

Step 4: Add Your Skills

Now list a few things you’re good at. These can be skills from work, school, or everyday life. Keep it short and to the point.

Examples:

  • Good with people

  • Fast learner

  • Comfortable with computers

  • Can lift heavy items

  • Always on time

  • Pays attention to detail

  • Works well in a team

You can write them in a list or use bullet points.

Step 5: Review and Save

Before you send or print your resume, double-check everything:

  • Make sure there are no spelling errors

  • Keep it to one page if you can

  • Use an easy-to-read font like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman

  • Save the file as a PDF so it looks the same no matter who opens it

Example file name:
John_Smith_Resume.pdf
