By the Grace... She Walked Again
It started like any other day.
October 12, 2018. She woke up and called her mom to wish her a happy birthday, got dressed, and headed into work for a 12-hour shift. On the drive, her feet tingled slightly—but she shrugged it off as being tired. After work, she went home, did some cleaning, cooked, and went to bed. It was ordinary. Uneventful.
Until the next morning.
She woke up to a terrifying reality—she couldn’t feel anything below her diaphragm. Her legs wouldn’t move. She couldn’t walk. Alone and panicked, she called her mom, who immediately rushed over and flagged down a neighbor. Together, they got her into the car, and her mom drove from Decatur to Huntsville as fast as she could.
Hospital staff didn’t waste a second. Within two hours of arriving, doctors had performed a spinal tap and delivered the diagnosis: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)—a rare and dangerous autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the nerves, causing paralysis. The doctors told her if they hadn’t caught it when they did, she would’ve likely needed to be placed on a ventilator.
From that moment on, her life was never the same.
She had to relearn how to walk, how to eat, how to live again. She endured over 75 IVIG treatments through 2022—a brutal process that took its toll on her body. Doctors suspected either a stomach virus or a flu shot just before the onset may have triggered it.
Through every setback, she prayed. Through every painful treatment, she leaned into her faith. Through every moment she couldn’t do it on her own, she believed that God was doing it for her.
Today, she’s walking. Living. Moving forward. She still experiences lingering symptoms here and there, but she knows exactly who carried her through.
God listened. God healed. And by His grace, she’s here.
