A Final Look Inside the Lawrence County Annex and Jail
LCtoday was granted the opportunity to take one final look inside the Lawrence County Annex and the former Lawrence County Jail, located on the eastern side of Moulton’s historic square, before their demolition. With around 30 minutes of footage, we captured the hauntingly quiet halls and empty spaces that once played a central role in county operations and justice.
Demolition of the buildings began on Monday, November 4, when crews entered to address the asbestos removal process. The buildings, constructed in 1911 (Annex) and 1950 (Jail), have fallen into dangerous disrepair. County officials noted that the structures have become safety hazards, with interiors collapsing and requiring significant, impractical repairs.
While the demolition is scheduled to take approximately three months, officials believe it could be completed sooner. Once cleared, the space will be replaced with additional parking and a through road connecting Main Street to Seminary Street, which will serve the newly renovated courthouse and benefit local businesses.
LCtoday would like to thank Bobby Burch and the Lawrence County Commission for allowing this walkthrough to take place. This rare opportunity to document the buildings’ final moments highlights their storied past and the significant changes ahead for Moulton’s downtown square.
The full video will premiere live on LCtoday’s Facebook page at 6 PM on Friday, December 20th. Don’t miss this final look at the spaces where so many stories began—and ended. RSVP to the live event here.
