From Moulton to Mombasa: The Farthest Travels of Lawrence County Folks

Ever wonder just how far folks from Lawrence County have ventured from home? We recently asked our followers, “What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home?”—and y’all delivered answers from every corner of the globe.

Assuming most of our respondents live in or around Lawrence County, we did some digging to find out just how far those places really are from home base. Here’s what we found:

🌍 The Farthest Reaches

Several people have been across the globe, topping the distance charts:

  • Mitchell Hallmark visited Hyderabad, India, roughly 8,700 miles away.

  • Charles Burks made it to Mombasa, Kenya, about 8,400 miles away.

  • Karen Christensen Greenwell and Austin Blankenship both cited Beijing, China, which is 7,000 miles from home.

  • David Pierce mentioned Dongducheon or Camp Casey, South Korea, about 6,900 miles out.

  • Pam Meadows Randolph reported going to Ukraine, which clocks in around 5,700 miles.

  • Sherry Nelson and Donna Hester Flannagan included Israel as their furthest point, at around 6,300 miles.

✈️ Island Escapes & Pacific Dreams

The most popular faraway location? Hawaii — named by at least 7 people! That’s about 4,300 miles from Moulton, depending on which island.

Others included:

  • Guam (~7,500 miles)

  • St. Lucia, Aruba, and Bermuda (all around 1,500–2,000 miles)

  • Isla Mujeres, Mexico (around 1,200 miles)

🇪🇺 European Travels

From the UK and Ireland to Paris, Rome, and Scotland, several LC folks have crossed the Atlantic:

  • Edinburgh, Scotland – 4,000+ miles

  • Rome, Italy – ~5,100 miles

  • Paris, France – ~4,600 miles

  • London, England – ~4,300 miles

🇨🇦 North American Treks

A handful of readers ventured north to Canada, including Smithers, British Columbia (almost 3,000 miles).
Others went west and north through the U.S., including:

  • Spokane, WA – 2,228 miles

  • Fairbanks, Alaska – 4,000+ miles

  • Presque Isle, Maine – ~1,600 miles

  • Rochester, MN and Fond du Lac, WI – ~900-1,000 miles

  • Los Angeles, CA – ~1,900 miles

  • Denver, CO – ~1,200 miles

🇺🇸 Coast-to-Coast U.S. Highlights

Quite a few folks listed classic American spots:

  • Grand Canyon, AZ

  • Key West, FL

  • Lakeland, FL

  • Chicago, IL

  • New Jersey

  • Washington, DC

  • Sandusky, OH

  • Hesston, KS

  • Oklahoma

And for some, just getting out of North Alabama was far enough — shoutout to David Eddy, who said he “went to Decatur once and didn’t like it.” 😂

🚗 Road Trips, Military Life, and Childhood Memories

Many of these long-distance adventures were tied to military assignments, cross-country road trips, family vacations, or even being born overseas.

One funny and relatable comment came from Chris Smith, who said:

“Went to Landersville last week but didn’t stay ‘cause it was all new people there.”
We feel that.
