The Results Will Shock You: LC’s Best Mascot Revealed
Lawrence County showed up in force when asked a simple question: Which county school, past or present, has the best mascot? The responses weren’t just votes — they were memories, tributes, and friendly rivalries that highlighted how much pride each school’s symbol still carries.
After tallying up every comment, here’s how the numbers break down — and the stories that make each mascot unforgettable.
🐝 Hatton Hornets & Mt. Hope Yellow Jackets – 7%
The stingers had their say, with plenty of folks buzzing about Hornets and Jackets.
Crystal Cox gave her vote to Hatton:
“Back in the day when it was Corey Ellis, I would 100% say Hatton Hornets!”
Tina Hopkins Brackin tied Mt. Hope to the swarm:
“Mt. Hope Yellow Jackets forever but now they have joined their wasp cousin, Hatton Hornets, so go Big Blue!”
From Hornets to Jackets, these mascots may be small, but their bite is memorable.
🧡 Courtland Chiefs – 8%
Though Courtland High is no more, the Chiefs remain one of the most distinct mascots in county history.
Jessica Audrey proudly declared: “Courtland Chiefs 🧡🖤.”
Michelle McMillan Dotson and Crystal Mayes echoed the same, proving that the Chiefs still hold a special place in LC tradition.
👹 Lawrence County Red Devils – 13%
Few mascots drew as much passion — or debate — as the Red Devils.
Melina Terry gave a shoutout to a fan favorite:
“Nobody compares to Tate Gilley as the Red Devil… js.”
Her comment quickly gathered support, with Tiffany Dawn Proctor replying, “Big facts! He was the best!”Chris Spangler recalled one of the more daring moments:
“To my knowledge, only one mascot went and planted their respective flag in the middle of the field in the middle of a game... Red Devils.”
But not everyone loved the image. Greg Gentry admitted:
“Honestly I never cared for LCHS having a protégé of satan for a mascot. I kinda like the Hatton hornet…”
Whether you loved it or questioned it, the Devil sure got people talking — which is exactly what mascots are meant to do.
🐾 Speake Bobcats – 14%
The Bobcats clawed their way into third place, backed by alumni who remembered not just the mascot, but the family atmosphere of the school itself.
Jill King painted the picture perfectly:
“Speake and we had the best booster club / PTO!! Always getting to go to pep rallies as an elementary kid! Elementary homecoming dance! 3-on-3 basketball tournaments. I remember it always being something fun to do and look forward to.”
Others showed their Bobcat love in bursts of green, gold, and white:
Pam Terry: “Speake Bobcats 💚🤍💛”
Jo Ann Archer: “Speake Bobcats, of course!”
Even without the high school, the Bobcat spirit is still prowling strong.
🐻 Hazlewood Golden Bears – 15%
Though Hazlewood High School closed in 2009, the Golden Bear pride is still alive and well. Fans didn’t just vote — they carried on the roar.
Sara Oliver showed her colors proudly:
“Hazlewood Golden Bears 💜💛💜💛”
Brenda Long kept it simple but heartfelt:
“I would have to say the Hazelwood bear.”
Beth Briley and Sandra Stutts echoed the same: “Hazlewood Golden Bears.”
The Bears proved that some mascots never fade — they just get more legendary with time.
🎭 Honorable Mentions – 2%
A few mascots outside the “big six” got creative shoutouts: the Mandarin Mustangs and even schools with “Hurricanes” and “Tropical Storms.” Proof that LC folks never forget a good mascot — no matter where it came from. ⛈️
🦅 East Lawrence Eagles – 40%
The Eagles absolutely dominated, with four out of every ten voters swooping in for East Lawrence. What set the Eagles apart wasn’t just the name, but the mascots who brought it to life.
Meaghan Bowling shared about one of the most famous Eagles:
“Rocky from East Lawrence High School. He was a 2-time All American, Citrus Bowl performer, and lots of other awards. He did all of this in his two years of being mascot. Also, all the Eagles past and present have been/are amazing!”
Judy Mccaghren brought back memories of Marcy “Mac” the Eagle (2001–2004), sparking replies from several who called her the best to ever do it. Sydney Olivia Shankle said:
“The best one to ever do it 🥹🥹”
Ashley Copeland highlighted what makes EL unique:
“East Lawrence Eagles 🦅! The only one with an actual physical mascot, lol! Many awards have been given to our past and present ones!”
Even today, East Lawrence’s current mascot Swoop is continuing the legacy, with Krysee Waldrep Wright proudly pointing out:
“SWOOP is this year’s camp champion at Alabama, AND made All-American!!”
From Rocky to Swoop, the Eagles’ nest has no shortage of icons.
